Kitty Hawk Kites

Thkittyhawkkites2ere's a very good reason why Orville and Wilbur Wright came to the Outer Banks to test out their 1902airplane- the wind conditions on the Outer Banks are second to none for flying machines. If you didn't bring your kite along head over to Kitty Hawk Kites, also offer stunt kites for more intricate and challenging action on the sand. Have a blast while the wind is high, but just make sure it's not too high - kites can have trouble in 20-25 mph breezes, but on sunny days with a light wind, kite flying is literally a breeze.   Address: 5848 Hatteras Landing, Hatteras, NC 27953    Phone:  (252) 986-1446

Sea Worthy Gallery

seaworthyIn a stunningly beautiful robin’s-egg blue building on N.C. 12 just before the ferry docks, you’ll find Sea Worthy Gallery. Painter and owner Carole Nunnally showcases fine, hand-crafted local and regional art in a variety of mediums, including painting, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, wood carvings and much more. Rather than the expected grouping by artistic mediums, she divides the gallery into themes – shorebirds, marine life, boats and lighthouses, whimsical, jewelry-pottery and people-places-things. It adds up to a delightful shopping experience. The gallery has the largest selection of N.C.-made pottery on Hatteras Island, and the hand-painted porcelain and sand dollar ornaments are some of the favorite items here.  Phone:  (252) 986-6510.  Website

Sticky Bottom Produce Company

stickybottomSticky Bottom Produce Company

This  is a new addition to Hatteras Village, built in an area locally know as Sticky Bottom . Sticky Bottom is a low lying area of the village. In the 1940s and before, there were many fish camps located in the area. Local fisherman built their net houses close to the shore, and walkways were built to and from the fish camps so the fishermen didn't have to walk in the mud.  The produce company carries fresh fruit and vegetables, much of it grown in North Carolina, that go well with local seafood.   The market is open May through September/October.   252-986-1037    stickybottomproduce@embarqmail.com
